My goal as a wedding photographer is to capture your day, not create it. While posed portraits are a fun part of a wedding, they are not the moments you remember. As a photojournalist, I keep a watchful eye and camera ready to capture the moments that make up who you and your family are.
After graduating from college with a degree in Photojournalism and beginning a career in newspapers, someone asked me to shoot a wedding. At the time I did not consider myself a wedding photographer, but I agreed because they wanted to tell a story of their day. They asked me to document the laughs, a few tears, and all the excitement that went along with the wedding. I agreed, and found that I had been missing out. Weddings are full of amazing moments, great people, and a chance to make once in a lifetime images. Meaningful images. Images that are more than just a snap shot, or a grip and grin. I am talking about the kind of art that you hang on your wall, look at daily, and evoke the feelings you had on you wedding.
A big part of capturing the true you on your wedding has to do with the photographer getting to know you. Your likes, dislikes, interest, etc. By learning these things about each couple, I am better prepared to know your expectations, create portraits that tell about who you are, as well as develop trust that allows you to be comfortable in with myself and a camera around. This is when true documentary photography happens.
To get to know each other, I suggest couples do an engagement session. While it is not required, it really does help get the camera jitters out and allows people to see how I will work on the day of their wedding. We also meet with every couple 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding to plan a realistic timeline, discuss family photos and dynamics, as well as talk about any ideas and what is important to you.
With a background in news media, I know how important communication and deadlines are. I work hard to communicate with you and get things done in a timely manner. By planning and communication, we can avoid any problems on the wedding day which allows you to do what you were meant to at a wedding. Enjoy it!
